The more northerly sites in Asia, and those lying at high altitudes, are frozen in winter and are therefore used only seasonally. Some of those on the northern shores of the Mediterranean may also freeze in severe winters, but rarely for more than a few days. One characteristic of habitats used by flamingos is that they are generally quite alkaline and often several times saltier than the oceans. In the Camargue, flamingos feed regularly on brine shrimp in ponds with salt deposits on the substrate, in the salinity range 200–250‰ NaCl (sodium chloride), with a maximum salinity of 280‰ NaCl measured during food-sampling studies.
They allow a substantial proportion of ingested salt to be excreted as a strongly hypertonic salt solution. It is this ability to ingest salt that enables flamingos to use such habitats, and is probably also the reason why they are often the only birds exploiting the invertebrate fauna. Surprisingly, this characteristic of flamingos has never been studied in detail, even though they forage in some of the most saline habitats used by birds. The waters generally have a high pH value, for example from pH 9 to 11 in the lakes of the Rift valley in East Africa (Tuite 1981).
It is not clear how flamingos know when these pans are suitably flooded, or even if they know that a pan holds water without actually going there to see for themselves. It could be that birds fly inland from the more permanent water bodies following large-scale rain fronts, as other species are known to do (Simmons et al. 1999), in search of suitable feeding (and breeding) areas. The flamingos 37 Inland lakes: These may be saline and/or alkaline and seldom dry out completely. If they are deep, flamingos will be restricted to the shallower parts, or they will swim to feed.
